In previous years, I have found to have many wonderful conversations with students regarding our class reading. I noticed most of the conversations always began with...because...
I decided to post our Metacognitive Thinking Stem anchor chart near our class meeting area. My hope was to assist the students in starting a conversation using these sentence starters...I have noticed that students were using our anchor chart to start class discussions and sometimes we needed to be reminded to start with I'm thinking... I actually started to sing to the students hoping that this would help them remember some of the thinking stems.
"Metacognition, thinking about our thinking.
I'm thinking....
I'm wondering...
I'm picturing..."
For homework, to reinforce these Metacognitive thinking stems and to make our reading visible, students have a reference sheet (a smaller copy of our class chart) to begin recording their reading on post it notes. This helps comprehension because it makes them stop and think about what they are reading while they are reading.
Have you tried this before? Has anyone else created songs to aid in remembering Metacognitive thinking strategies? If so, would you share? I am always looking for more ways to help my students remember...
